Insurance Support for PTANT Member Associations

Professional teaching associations bring educators together through professional learning, events, resources, advocacy and subject-area networks. These activities can also create responsibilities and risks for office bearers, volunteers, committees and the association.

The PTANT Insurance Program provides eligible member associations with a pathway to KBI’s association insurance team. KBI can learn how your association operates, review the information and policies you provide, and seek available insurance terms for your consideration. Availability, cover and price are subject to insurer appetite, eligibility and underwriting.

IMPORTANT No policy or type of cover is suitable for every association. Cover,  limits, sub-limits, excesses, conditions, exclusions and premiums  depend on the information provided, insurer acceptance and the final policy documents.

Insurance Options for Teaching Associations

An association’s insurance needs can depend on its legal structure, people, activities, contracts, events, assets and data. Depending on those needs and available products, KBI may be able to assist with the following types of insurance. These covers are not automatically included and may require separate policies or sections.

Association Liability

Association liability products may combine cover sections such as directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, crime, statutory liability and professional indemnity. The people insured and the scope of each section vary by product.

Voluntary Workers

Voluntary workers insurance may provide specified benefits if an insured volunteer is injured while undertaking covered voluntary work. Eligibility, insured activities and benefits depend on the policy.

Cyber Insurance

Cyber insurance may cover selected costs and liabilities arising from covered cyber incidents, including some incident response, privacy or network liability, business interruption and cybercrime losses. Cover is subject to definitions, security requirements, limits and exclusions.

Public and event liability

Public liability insurance may respond where an insured association is legally liable for third-party personal injury or property damage arising from covered activities. Disclose events and check the proposed policy, venue agreement and event-specific requirements.

Office and property insurance

Property insurance may cover selected contents, computers, portable equipment and other association property against insured events. Options may include business interruption or property away from the usual premises, subject to policy terms.

Risks to Consider

A useful insurance review starts with what the association actually does, not only the name of its current policy. Consider the following areas and provide complete and accurate information to KBI and prospective insurers.

Tell KBI promptly if the association changes its activities, holds a new type of event or takes on new contractual obligations

Governance

Decision-makers, office bearers, handling of funds, legal duties and regulatory obligations.

Professional learning

Workshops, webinars, resources, accreditation-related activities, training and advice.

Events

Conferences, awards, meetings, venues, attendance, suppliers and event-specific obligations.

Volunteers and people

Volunteer duties, employees, contractors, reimbursements and who needs to be insured.

Data and systems

Membership, event and payment data; access controls; backups; incident response; service providers.

Property

Owned, borrowed or hired equipment, stock, signage and portable items used away from the office.

Contracts

Indemnities, waivers, insurance limits and evidence-of-cover requirements in grants, venues and supplier agreements.

What May Not Be Automatically Covered?

No single association policy automatically covers every activity, person, asset or loss. The following are areas to check, rather than exclusions under any particular policy:

  • Events, venues or activities not disclosed to the insurer
  • Professional services or advice where professional indemnity cover is not selected or does not apply
  • Injury to employees, which may fall under separate workers compensation arrangements
  • Volunteer activities or people outside the relevant policy definition
  • Cyber incidents, crime or social engineering losses outside selected sections, conditions or limits
  • Property or portable equipment that is not insured, adequately valued or covered away from the premises
  • Known circumstances, prior matters or claims outside the policy period or notification requirements
  • Fines, penalties, contractual liabilities or other amounts that are uninsurable at law or excluded
  • Losses below an excess or above a policy limit or sub-limit

The exact cover, exclusions, limits, sub-limits, excesses, conditions and endorsements depend on the insurer and final policy wording, schedule and supporting documents. Review the documents provided before deciding whether a policy is appropriate for the association.
