Truck and transport insurance is a broad term for insurance designed around the vehicles, liabilities and operational risks involved in moving goods by road.
Depending on the business, the insurance program may need to protect a prime mover or rigid truck, trailers and support vehicles, as well as exposures involving customer goods, third parties and lost trading time after an insured event.
A collision, rollover, theft or major breakdown in the transport chain can create more than a vehicle repair bill. It may also lead to towing and recovery costs, damaged cargo, third-party demands, missed delivery commitments and interrupted income.
KBI can help assess these connected exposures and approach relevant insurers for an insurance program structured around your fleet, freight task and operating model.
The needs of a metropolitan owner-driver can be very different from those of an interstate linehaul fleet, a refrigerated carrier or a contractor working on mine and civil sites. Before seeking terms, KBI can consider the vehicles you operate, who drives them, what you carry, where you travel, the contracts you sign and how long the business could absorb a vehicle being off the road.
We can help arrange insurance for a wide range of vehicles. Examples may include:
Underwriting note: Some vehicle types, freight classes, operating areas and activities require specialist markets or may be restricted. Confirm acceptance before describing a particular risk as insurable.
Subject to insurer appetite, underwriting criteria and policy terms, KBI may be able to seek insurance options for:
Prime movers and semi-trailers
Rigid trucks and light rigid vehicles
Road trains and multi-trailer combinations
Tippers and bulk haulage vehicles
Refrigerated and temperature-controlled vehicles
Tankers and liquid transport vehicles
Concrete agitators and specialised bodies
Vehicle carriers and tow trucks
Livestock and agricultural transport vehicles
Courier, parcel and last-mile delivery fleets
Utes, vans and support vehicles within a commercial fleet
Contractor vehicles used in mining, civil and construction operations
Truck and transport insurance may be relevant to businesses that own or operate commercial vehicles, arrange road freight or accept responsibility for goods in transit, including:
Owner-drivers and single-truck businesses
Small and medium transport operators
Large commercial fleets
Freight, logistics and distribution businesses
Linehaul and general carriers
Bulk, refrigerated and specialised freight operators
Couriers and delivery businesses
Civil, earthmoving and mining contractors with road-going fleets
Manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers operating their own delivery vehicles
Businesses using subcontracted carriers or hired vehicles

Transport risks overlap. Damage to the truck, damage to the load and liability to a third party can arise from the same incident but fall under different policy sections, limits or insurers. Gaps can also emerge when business activities, routes, freight or contracts change between renewals.
A specialist broker can help present the risk clearly to insurers, compare the structure of available options and draw attention to material exclusions, sub-limits and conditions before placement.
Safety and legal obligations: Insurance does not replace compliance with road transport, work health and safety or Chain of Responsibility laws. The Heavy Vehicle National Law applies in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. It can also apply to WA or NT vehicles when they operate in those jurisdictions. Western Australia and the Northern Territory have separate heavy-vehicle laws; in WA, Chain of Responsibility obligations arise under WA legislation. Operators should obtain legal or regulatory advice for every jurisdiction in which they operate.
No policy covers every event, vehicle, load or liability. Exclusions and limitations vary, and the examples below are illustrative only:
Always review the final policy wording, schedule, endorsements and any applicable Product Disclosure Statement. KBI can help explain the proposed insurance terms and identify questions requiring clarification before placement.
Truck insurance is often arranged under a commercial motor policy, but a broader transport insurance program may also include liability, customer goods or carriers’ risk, downtime and other cover. The name alone does not show what is insured.
